    Who We Are

The York County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is committed to the humane treatment of all animals. To fulfill this commitment, the society shall:

Maintain a shelter as temporary home for the lost, unwanted animals subjected to unfair or cruel treatment.

Protect animals from unnecessary pain and suffering.

Work for the passage and enforcement of laws promoting and providing for the humane treatment of animals.

Cultivate, with the people of the community, an awareness of the animals, whose world we share.

Instill respect and appreciation for all living things.

Promote animal welfare by reducing pet overpopulation through the prevention of unwanted births by offering low-income public spay/neuter assistance programs.

Promote the adoption of shelter animals into permanent homes.

The York County SPCA is a nonprofit organization with no access to tax other funding than the $10 per stray dog fee we receive from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Bureau of Dog Law, which in no manner covers our costs. We currently receive no state funding for stray cats. The York County SPCA operates primarily on private donations.

The York County SPCA serves as a temporary home each year to over 4,000 stray, lost and unwanted animals. Of the 4,000 animals we receive each year, 60% are stray and 40% are surrendered by their owners. Sadly, there are too many animals and not enough homes.

The York County SPCA cannot emphasize enough the importance of spaying and neutering our pets. Pet overpopulation is very much not only an epidemic for York County but also for many cities across the United States. The best solution to pet overpopulation is PREVENTION by spaying and neutering pets. The York County SPCA is certainly not the cause of pet overpopulation; however, we are the recipients of its effects and are challenged each day to find alternatives other than euthanasia. The need for euthanasia could be greatly reduced if all owners spayed or neutered their pets and if owners adopted their pets from an animal shelter. Studies have shown that between 5 and 6 million animals die in shelters each year. Sadly, only 15% of the public visit animal shelters when looking for a pet. Please remember to visit the York County SPCA when looking for a pet.
